WASHINGTON (AP) — It seems like everyone who saw Prince perform at the White House this weekend was talking about it on social media, except for the White House. White House spokesman Josh Earnest refuses to confirm that Prince played a party for President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle. Earnest will only say the Obamas threw the party on their own dime but won’t say how much it cost. The Reverend Al Sharpton tweeted it was awesome to see Prince and Stevie Wonder perform together.
Bono Meets With Canada’s Legislators
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Bono is taking a day off from the U2 tour to take in meetings with Canadian lawmakers. Bono was in Ottawa yesterday to talk with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper as well as opposition leaders. Bono wanted to discuss foreign aid and maternal and child health aid projects in Africa and in other areas. Harper’s office says Bono requested the meeting.
Van Morrison Named a Knight
LONDON (AP) — Van Morrison will be granted knighthood. Queen Elizabeth will bestow the honor upon Morrison for his services to music and tourism in Northern Ireland. It was announced on Friday as part of the queen’s Birthday Honors list.
Manilow, KC, Alabama Set For “A Capitol Fourth”
WASHINGTON (AP) — Barry Manilow will return as headliner for the Independence Day celebration on Washington’s National Mall. KC and the Sunshine Band, Alabama, Hunter Hayes, Nicole Scherzinger and Meghan Linsey from “The Voice” will also perform. The show will air as “A Capitol Fourth” on PBS stations.
Nile Rodgers Founds Freakout! Festival
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Nile Rodgers is getting some of his famous friends to play his very own festival. Rodgers will host the FreakOut! Festival in Riverhead, New York, on August 4 and 5. The lineup includes Beck, Duran Duran, Paloma Faith, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Chaka Khan, Janelle Monae, Q-Tip, Keith Urban and Pharrell Williams. Rodgers plans to collaborate with every artist who performs.
John Fogerty Has New Take On The Phrase “Fortunate Son”
NEW YORK (AP) — John Fogerty feels a little weird about calling his autobiography “Fortunate Son,” but he’s taking a different approach to those words. Fogerty says the song “Fortunate Son” was a harsh look at the sons of rich families who escaped the draft during the Vietnam war or were sent to places that weren’t dangerous. He says he calls his book “Fortunate Son” because he has been very fortunate in living his dream to make music. He says that’s his take on the phrase now. Fogerty’s book will come out in October.
Jim Morrison Poem Will Be Auctioned
NEW YORK (AP) — A handwritten Jim Morrison poem that eerily foretells of his death is for sale. The poem was written on the last page torn out of a notebook with phrases like, “Last words, last words out,” and “I have drunk the drug of forgetfulness.” The notebook originally was intact but broken apart and sold through the years. It was found among Morrison’s possessions in the Paris hotel room where he died in 1971. Auctioneer Paddle8 says bidding is expected to go as high as $80,000. The auction ends June 25.
Looking Back at Christopher Lee’s Music Career
UNDATED (AP) — Maybe you know actor Christopher Lee from his Dracula movies, his “Lord of the Rings” films…his metal albums. His what? In 2010, at the age of 88, Lee recorded a heavy metal album called “Charlemagne: By The Sword and the Cross.” He followed it up with an album titled “Charlemagne: The Omens of Death” that featured Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Lee is one of the convicts caught in the spotlight on the cover of Paul McCartney and Wings’ “Band on the Run” album. He also famously introduced Meat Loaf on “Saturday Night Live” in 1978 by saying, “I would like you to meet….Loaf!” Lee died on Sunday at the age of 93.
Christina Out, Gwen In On “The Voice”
NEW YORK (AP) — Gwen Stefani will take over Christina Aguilera’s chair on “The Voice” next season. Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Pharrell Williams also return as coaches. The new season starts in September.
Ed Sheeran Signs on for Global Citizen Festival
NEW YORK (AP) — Ed Sheeran will reward those who fight to end poverty with a free show in New York. Sheeran will perform at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival on September 26. Other performers will be announced next month. The concert is free and fans earn tickets by taking actions to end poverty at www.GlobalCitizen.org . The concert will air on MSNBC.
