LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joni Mitchell is on her way to better health and a judge is pleased with how her friend is taking care of her. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Cunningham the Third says Mitchell’s longtime friend, Leslie Morris, should remain in charge of Mitchell’s health care. Cunningham was impressed with Mitchell’s progress as she recovers from an aneurysm in March. She is home in Los Angeles and has regained her speech. A court-appointed attorney says Mitchell is expected to make a full recovery. Morris does not have any control over Mitchell’s finances.
Grateful Dead Say Farewell
CHICAGO (AP) — The Grateful Dead are no more, if they hold by what they say. Last night’s show in Chicago’s Soldier Field was billed as their final show as The Grateful Dead. They played three days of concerts in Chicago to mark the band’s 50th anniversary and paid tribute to the last place where Jerry Garcia performed with the Dead before he died in 1995. Trey Anastasio of Phish and Bruce Hornsby were among the guest musicians. The first song for Friday’s show was “Box of Rain,” the last song they had performed with Garcia.
President Obama, Empire State Building Pay Tribute To The Grateful Dead
WASHINGTON (AP) — Even President Barack Obama is giving his best wishes to the Grateful Dead as they wrap up 50 years in music. Obama issued a proclamation calling the Dead “an iconic American band that embodies the creativity, passion and ability to bring people together that makes American music so great.” He adds, “As Jerry would say, ‘Let there be songs to fill the air.'” Meanwhile, the Empire State Building in New York paid tribute to the Dead performing in Chicago on Saturday by synchronizing its LED tower lights to the band’s performance of “U.S. Blues.” Fans in Chicago were able to see the show by video. New Yorkers got an encore performance last night.
Billy Joel Marries
NEW YORK (AP) — Billy Joel has gotten married for the fourth time. He married girlfriend Alexis Roderick in a surprise ceremony during their annual Independence Day party on Joel’s estate on Long Island, according to his spokeswoman. The group of family and friends that were there did not know about the wedding beforehand. Among those attending included Joel’s second wife, Christie Brinkley, and his daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. Joel is 66 and Roderick is 34. They are expecting a child.
Styx Visit Nasa Scientists
LAUREL, Md. (AP) — Styx have met with the scientist who discovered Styx. Styx the band visited NASA’s New Horizons team in Laurel, Maryland, on Wednesday and met with Dr. Mark Showalter, who discovered Pluto’s faintest moon, also called Styx, in 2012. Showalter is a fan of the band and turned the tables on them by giving them an autographed poster of Pluto and its moons. New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern told the band, “When Pluto’s moon was named, it was for the river Styx, but no kidding, we really had you guys in mind too.”
Journey Drummer Still In Jail
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon judge has denied bail for Journey drummer Deen Castronovo. Marion County Circuit Court Judge Channing Bennett says Castronovo violated a court order to stay away from a woman after his arrest June 14 for domestic violence. Prosecutors say Castronovo texted the woman 122 times and called 35 times. His attorney, Jeffrey Jones, says Castronovo was high on meth when he was arrested and he will go to rehab if released. Castronovo was indicted this week.
Billy Joel Bests Elton John, Sets New Record at MSG
NEW YORK (AP) — Billy Joel is celebrating his 65th. Not his birthday, but his 65th performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden. He’s now set a record for the most performances by a single artist at the venue, topping Elton John. Joel played the piano for most of his more than two hour performance. John has performed at MSG 64 times.
Musicians Mourn Chris Squire of Yes
UNDATED (AP) — The tributes are pouring in for Yes bassist Chris Squire. Former Yes singer Jon Anderson says he and Squire were “musical brothers” and in spite of their differences, he’s so glad they were able to reconnect recently. Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes says he is “utterly devastated beyond words.” Tom Morello calls Squire “an extremely talented musician’s musician who mastered his instrument and took it to new realms.” Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler says he’s shocked to hear the news and calls Squire “one of the great bass players.” Dave Mustaine of Megadeth calls Squire “a tremendous talent and a terribly sad loss.” Geddy Lee says Squire was a huge inspiration to him. Squire died over the weekend after battling a rare form of leukemia.
Trent Reznor, Common Among Those Invited To Join Film Academy
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Trent Reznor and songwriting partner Atticus Ross, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, Sergio Mendes, Common and John Legend have been invited to join the group that votes on the Oscars. They are among the 322 people to receive invitations to join the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Oscar nominees are automatically considered.
Joni Mitchell Update
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joni Mitchell’s friend and conservator says it was an aneurysm that sent the Grammy-winner to the hospital in March. Conservator Leslie Morris mentioned the aneurysm in a statement posted on Mitchell’s website yesterday. It provides the first significant details on Mitchell’s health status in months. Morris says Mitchell is speaking — and speaking well — while recovering at home. Mitchell’s unable to walk now, but is expected to make a full recovery.
