LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alabama Shakes say they are at a loss for words knowing they’re up for the album of the year Grammy. They write on Instagram they are proud of their “Sound and Color” album and they add, “To see it recognized in this way means the world to us.” Their competition is Taylor Swift’s “1989,” The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind The Madness,” Chris Stapleton’s “Traveller” and “To Pimp A Butterfly” by Kendrick Lamar. The Grammys are February 15 in Los Angeles.

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s hard to believe, but it was 35 years ago today John Lennon was shot and killed. Lennon was gunned down outside of his New York City apartment building. It was the end of an era for many shocked fans. Lennon and the Beatles redefined rock and roll. Later, Lennon became icon of the peace movement. His killer, Mark David Chapman, is still in prison, after being sentenced to 20 years to life. Chapman was last denied parole in August of 2014.

PARIS (AP) — U2’s performance in Paris last night was about more than music. Bono paid respects to 130 people killed by extremists in Paris on Nov. 13, and 14 people killed in a mass shooting last week in California. Names of the Paris attack victims were projected on a huge video screen in the arena. Bono wrapped himself in a French tricolor flag for the encore. He told the crowd, “We stand together with the families of those killed in Paris. We stand together with the families of those killed in San Bernardino.” U2’s performance last month in Paris was postponed following the attacks.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adele’s “25” album is still a huge seller. Billboard reports it sold another 1.11 million copies in its second week of release. It’s the first album to sell more than a million copies in two separate weeks. In two weeks, it has sold 4.49 million copies. The “25” album became the best-selling album in all of 2015 in just three days.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will tour next year. Springsteen has announced The River Tour will start January 16 in Pittsburgh. Springsteen released the four-disc collection, “The Ties That Bind: The River Collection” on Friday. It’s a deluxe version of his 1980 “The River” album. Springsteen will also perform on “Saturday Night Live” on December 19.

NEW YORK (AP) — An anonymous buyer paid $790,000 for Ringo Starr’s copy of the White Album with serial number 1. Julien’s Auctions reports the sale beats the record for the highest amount paid for a record, which was set in 2015 when Jack White bought Elvis Presley’s acetate recording of “My Happiness” for $300,000. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay confirms he paid $1.75 million for Starr’s first Ludwig drum set. More than 800 items owned by Starr and his wife, Barbara Bach, were sold in a two-day auction. Part of the proceeds will benefit the couple’s Lotus Children Foundation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It didn’t take very long for Aretha Franklin to come up with the Carole King song she likes best. And that’s probably because it’s one she has ended up being associated with herself. Franklin says “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” is her favorite King tune. Franklin performed the tune during last night’s tribute to King at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Accompanying her on the red carpet was veteran music mogul Clive Davis.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Carole King has won numerous Grammys, sold millions of albums and has had her songs covered by a host of artists along the way. And last night, she picked up the Kennedy Center Honor. So what does she feel is her greatest accomplishment? She had them with her last night: her children. She says they are the thing in life that she is most proud of. As for her music, King says she’s pleased that she was able to write music that so many people feel means something to them. Honored along with King last night in Washington were actress, singer and dancer Rita Moreno, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas and actress Cicely Tyson.

UNDATED (AP) — Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars can probably expect some good news this morning. They’re all considered shoo-ins for Grammy nominations. The list of nominees will be revealed this morning. Other contenders include Sam Hunt, Meghan Trainor, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Walk The Moon. Even though Adele has been a juggernaut with sales of her “25” album, it won’t get nominated even once. It came out after the Grammy deadline. The Grammys are February 15 in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Films about Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone and one by Laurie Anderson have made the short list for Oscar consideration for best documentary. The movies “Amy” and “What Happened, Miss Simone?” are two of 15 films on the list, along with “Heart of a Dog,” Anderson’s ode to her late dog, Lolabelle. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says 124 documentaries were submitted. Five nominees will be announced on January 14. The Oscars are February 28.
