New York’s Newsday reports Joel is pledging one million dollars to the Long Island High School for the Arts if the local board of education will keep it open for three years. It took just 87 days to reach that milestone, breaking the previous record set by Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” which took 158 days to hit a billion. Getting a billion YouTube views used to be a jaw-dropping feat, but now 17 videos have done it. Four of them were released just in the last year. Don McLean’s Wife Seeks Protection from Him

January 22, 2016

CAMDEN, Maine (AP) — Don McLean’s wife has been granted a temporary order of protection from him after she cited a pattern of abuse that has lasted three decades. McLean was arrested Monday for misdemeanor domestic violence. His wife filed a handwritten request for protection that said McLean’s rage was “unfathomably deep and scary” in the early days of their marriage. She says her husband terrorized her for four hours earlier this week and she feared for her life when she called 911. McLean has issued a statement saying his marriage is experiencing a “very painful breakdown” and he is not a villain. He says he may never recover from this but he hopes to be able to entertain people as he always has. McLean will resume touring next Wednesday in Chicago.

Pete Seeger’s Festival Takes a Year Off

January 22, 2016

BEACON, N.Y. (AP) — Pete Seeger’s annual music festival is off this year because of financial problems. The board of directors for the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater organization decided this week to cancel the festival, set for June 18 and 19. Seeger started the concerts in the 1970s as a fundraiser for the vessel the Clearwater to serve as a floating classroom for environmental causes. The Clearwater is undergoing a restoration right now, and the group’s president says all efforts are going toward that. The festival is expected to return in 2017. David Crosby, Los Lobos, Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones and the Mavericks have played the festival in the past.
