MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The only person who survived the 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding and The Bar-Kays has died. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports Bar-Kays trumpeter Ben Cauley died Monday at a Memphis hospital at the age of 67. The cause of death was not given. Cauley played trumpet on The Bar-Kays’ biggest hit, “Soul Finger.” The Bar-Kays were Redding’s backup band and all but bassist James Alexander were on board the plane that crashed in a lake near Madison, Wisconsin, in December 1967. Cauley had said he found a seat cushion that kept him from drowning. He quit the band in 1972 but continued to do session work, including for Keith Richard’s new album, “Crosseyed Heart.”
